Creating My First Tradition: Why a Yearly Calendar Matters to Me
Traditions have never been a big part of my life. For me, one day often feels like the next, blending together in a predictable rhythm. I don’t decorate for holidays, I don’t follow seasonal rituals, and I’ve never felt particularly tied to the idea of traditions. But recently, I decided to try something new—something small but meaningful. I’ve decided to start a tradition of getting a calendar every year.
At first glance, it might seem like a simple or even trivial decision, but to me, it represents something more. It’s about creating a moment of joy, reflection, and meaning in a world where days can otherwise feel monotonous.
Why This Tradition Matters
A calendar is more than just a practical tool to track the days; it’s a yearly snapshot of something I care about. This year, I chose a Super Mario-themed calendar, complete with 12 colorful posters for each month. At the end of the year, I’ll cut out those posters and decorate my walls with them, turning my choice into something lasting.
This simple act—picking a calendar and using it throughout the year—gives me something to look forward to. It’s a small tradition, but it’s mine, and it adds a touch of joy to the everyday.
The Power of Tradition
Traditions don’t have to be tied to holidays or cultural rituals. They can be personal, reflecting your own interests and values. Here are some of the positive aspects of traditions:
Stability and Comfort: Life can be unpredictable, but traditions offer a sense of stability. Knowing there’s something you’ll do every year can be a source of comfort.
Personal Meaning: A tradition doesn’t need to be big to be meaningful. Even something as small as getting a new calendar each year can hold personal significance.
A Marker of Time: Traditions remind us of the passing of time. Each new calendar becomes a symbol of a fresh start, a new chapter in life.
Reflection and Growth: They give us moments to pause and reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re going.
Why I’m Starting Small
I’ve never been a person who relied on traditions, so starting with something simple feels right. I don’t need to follow a societal norm or a cultural expectation. My calendar tradition is mine alone, and that’s what makes it special.
In the future, I might explore other traditions. Maybe I’ll get calendars with different themes each year—Greek mythology, inspiring landscapes, or even something philosophical. Each one will mark another year of my life and add a layer of meaning to the days ahead.
The Takeaway
Starting a tradition doesn’t have to be daunting. It doesn’t have to involve elaborate rituals or expensive plans. It can be as simple as picking out a calendar that brings you joy. For me, this tradition represents a small but significant way to add meaning and creativity to my life.
What about you? Do you have a tradition that brings stability or joy to your life? If not, maybe it’s time to create one.
